September 7 question – What genre would be the worst one for you to tackle and why?

Erotica was my first thought! But then I remembered reading some Sarah J. Maas recently and complaining to himself that I could write better than this “he speared me” shite.
Research time! This page has the clickbait title of 144 genres and thankfully it’s split into categories and sub-categories. I’ll be looking at the categories not the sub-categories – we don’t have all month.

The categories are:

  • Fantasy
  • Horror
  • Mystery
  • Romance
  • Science Fiction
  • Thriller and suspense
  • Western

At the end of the day, I write for my own enjoyment and pleasure. I won’t write in a genre I don’t enjoy and gives me zero pleasure. There’s only one category above that falls under this: horror. I don’t read it, I don’t watch it, I won’t ever write it. You could argue that horror would be the worst but as I said I won’t tackle it.

To answer the question:

I would find tackling Science Fiction and Western the worst. Science fiction because I’m not exactly the most technical gal you’ll meet. I choose pen & paper every time over phone and computer. I enjoy reading some Sci-fi but I’m not a huge fan. Western, then, well just no. Other than the horses, I don’t find it appealing at all. However I would give them a crack if the opportunity arose, sure why not. It fills me with dread though, it reminds me of the time I got my teeth pulled and the painkiller wore off before I had a chance to swallow the next painkiller. I threw an adult-sized tantrum because my mouth was so swollen and bloody I couldn’t swallow a tic-tac sized pill. Eventually I managed to swallow the damn thing and passed out on the bed!

There you have it, another month done. If you want to see what others wrote on this question click the link below and have a spin through the blogs. Feel free to comment here as well and let me know what you’d find difficult to tackle!

  1. I didn’t do the optional question this month, but if I had, I don’t think I could pick one either. Also, you don’t need a lot of tech knowledge to do sci fi necessarily, and I think a “space opera” with your style could be quite fun to read! Thanks for the resource link. There are SO many genres nowadays!

    • Haha! I can read it but yeah, writing it I’d be overcome with blushes and giggling inappropriately. Apparently there are restrictions to the amount of times you can say ‘penis’ and ‘vagina’ if you are writing YA… which explains all the bizarre vegetables and objects YA erotica writers use!

    • Westerns are all based in America… right? Like that period of time didn’t actually happen in Europe? Maybe Asian but not here as far as my terrible knowledge in history says. It wouldn’t make sense for me to attempt something that I couldn’t even research on the ground here.

      • I think Western stories can be anywhere where there was a ranch with cattle, livestock, etc. and let’s not forget the cowboys and cowgirls than mange them. 🙂

The world may not agree with me though. hehehe

  2. I just commented on Joylene’s post and said I’d forgotten about the erotica genre, and now it’s the first no-go zone for you too! LOL. If ever I read a bit of it I feel so discomfited I just want to go and wash my hands. I can’t imagine trying to write it! Safe to say, I’m going to leave that genre to the other brave souls out there. Sci-fi I feel is done best by people who truly understand science. Then it can be utterly brilliant. But I’d just be stabbing in the dark if I tried, so I leave it alone.

    • I’d attempt to write erotica… as long as I knew nobody would read it. I’d die of embarrassment!! Kudos to erotica writers, I’m in awe of them but nope!
Completely agree with your point on Sci-Fi. I rarely read it because I find it’s either amazing or lacking and it’s hard to track down the amazing ones.

    • As I stated in another comment, I always assumed Western is American only… maybe Australia too? So I’d feel weird writing about something that never happened in Europe. Yes, I know, fiction! Make it up, but all my stories started in a place I can physically go and look around.
