Broken mirror

I knocked a mirror on the ground
It made a huge cracking sound.
I was completely dumbstruck.
I did not need seven years of bad luck.

I left it for years on the floor.
My mom would charge through the door
Yelling at the mess and go to pick it up.
‘No! Not that! I’ll clean it up!’

I would tidy and hoover
Never touching the mirror
Believing in the power
Of a broken mirror.

The time came to move out
I had no choice but to check it out
I picked it up and flipped it over,
And stared at my answer:

My face reflected back from an unbroken mirror.
